Welcome to Cycjet. Professional manufacturer of intelligent inkjet coding and laser marking machines
When choosing industrial coding and marking equipment, manufacturers often come across terms such as CIJ, DOD, small-character inkjet printing, and large-character inkjet printing.
The difference between small-character and large-character printing is not simply the size of the printed text. The two technologies differ in their printing principles, equipment structures, and typical applications.
So, what do CIJ and DOD mean? And how should manufacturers choose the right inkjet printer for different production and marking requirements?
Both CIJ and DOD are non-contact inkjet printing technologies. During the printing process, the printhead does not need to directly contact the product. Instead, ink droplets are ejected onto the surface of the product or packaging to create the required identification.
Although both technologies use inkjet printing, their operating principles and typical applications are different.

CIJ stands for Continuous Inkjet. During operation, ink continuously circulates inside the system and forms a continuous stream of ink droplets. The system controls the required droplets so that they land on the product surface, forming text, numbers, barcodes, and other variable information.

CIJ is commonly used for printing small-sized variable information, which is why it is also known as small-character inkjet printing technology.
Common CIJ printing applications include:
The compact structure of a small character inkjet printer makes it suitable for integration into automated production lines. CIJ printers are widely used in food and beverage, daily chemical products, pharmaceuticals, electronics, cables, pipes, and industrial components.

For different application requirements, CYCJET provides small-character inkjet printers such as the B3020, B400i, and B900.
DOD stands for Drop on Demand. Unlike continuous inkjet technology, a DOD printhead ejects ink droplets only when they are needed to form the required printing content.

Multiple nozzles work according to the printing information to form text, numbers, graphics, codes, and other identification marks.
In industrial coding and marking, DOD technology is commonly used to create larger markings with better visibility from a distance. For this reason, DOD is often associated with large character inkjet printing.
Typical applications include:
A large character inkjet printer can print product names, model specifications, batch information, counting information, barcodes, QR codes, graphics, and classification marks.
For example, CYCJET ALT160 and ALT260 large-character inkjet printers can be configured with suitable printheads according to the required print height, printing content, and installation position, helping meet different online industrial marking requirements.

It is important to note that DOD refers to the drop-on-demand printing principle and does not necessarily mean a large-character inkjet printer. Some handheld inkjet printers and high-resolution inkjet printers also use drop-on-demand technology.
CIJ is more suitable for printing relatively small variable information, such as production dates, batch numbers, serial numbers, and codes, where the available printing area is limited.
DOD large-character printers are more suitable for larger text, graphics, and identification information, making the markings easier to see on cartons, bagged products, and large workpieces.
CIJ is mainly used for individual products and small- to medium-sized packages moving continuously along production lines. It is suitable for applications where the available printing area or marking position is relatively limited.
DOD large-character printers are more commonly used for cartons, bagged products, wood, building materials, steel, pipes, and other large industrial products.
A CIJ inkjet printer typically consists of a main unit, ink system, and compact printhead. The main unit and printhead are connected by an umbilical, creating a compact system that can be easily integrated into different production lines.
A DOD inkjet printer typically uses a separate controller and printhead structure. Different printhead sizes or quantities can be configured according to the required print height and actual production environment.
If you need to print dates, batch numbers, codes, or other small-sized variable information on bottles, flexible bags, cables, pipes, or industrial components, CIJ may be suitable for the application.
If you need to print larger and more visible text, graphics, or identification information on cartons, bagged products, wood, building materials, or large workpieces, DOD may be more appropriate.
Print height is only one factor to consider when selecting an industrial inkjet printer.
Before choosing the equipment, manufacturers should also consider the printing content, product material, production method, and operating environment.
Therefore, CIJ and DOD are designed for different industrial coding and marking requirements rather than being a simple comparison of which technology is better.
If you are unsure which type of inkjet printer is suitable for your application, you can provide CYCJET with product photos, printing content, product material, and production line information. CYCJET can recommend suitable equipment based on the actual application requirements and further verify the marking performance through sample testing.
